As we move into spring and summer, the various Maryland counties and the City of Baltimore are preparing to hold their annual tax sales.  The tax sales are an important tool for local governments, who rely on the income from the sale of the tax liens to fund their operations. Tax liens can also be very beneficial for investors, who are paid between 6% and 22% (the interest rate varies by County) interest on their lien amount.

Beginning in the spring, the tax offices begin to publish their lists of properties to be sold at tax sale, as well the terms of the sale and the purchase requirements.  Anyone interested in participating in the tax sale must first register with the county’s tax office. Each taxing jurisdiction has its individual registration requirements, so investors should be sure that their registration is properly filed or they may be disqualified from participating.

The registration deadlines and tax sale dates vary by county, but that information is generally posted on each county’s individual tax office website.  Each county publishes its notice of the tax sale at different times; however, some of the larger counties have published their registration deadlines and tax sale dates:
