Medical errors third leading cause of death

A recent study found fatal medical errors to be the third leading cause of death in the United States. According the study, medical errors kill upwards of 251,000 patients per year.

Not surprisingly, the study also shows that fatal medical errors are under-reported because doctors and hospitals don’t want to discuss their fatal medical errors.

Hospitals hide fatal medical errors

Hospitals closely guard the details of fatal medical mistakes.

A medical error is a deviation from the standard of care.  However, more medical errors could be prevented if there was open communication about fatal mishaps.

There is an urgent need for hospitals and doctors to establish standardized reporting of medical errors. Hospitals should bring instances of medical error into the open so healthcare professionals can learn from them and not make the same medical errors.

Medical practitioners must be held accountable for fatal medical errors that result from their negligence. When a patient is hurt by a health care provider, there may be grounds for a medical malpractice case.
