Top Teen Driver Distraction during 100 Deadliest Days
In the past, AAA called the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the “summer driving season.”
Now, AAA is labeling that period as the “100 Deadliest Days,” because more teen drivers are on the road. The number of car accident deaths involving teen drivers rises to 10 every day during the summer months.
Using dashboard cameras and documenting more than 2,200 car accidents involving teen drivers, AAA determine a surprising statistic. According to the research, 60 percent of teen driving accident are caused by distracted driving, but cell phones are not the top problem.
The top teen driver distraction is other passengers!
15 percent of teen driver accidents are caused by other passengers. 12 percent are caused by texting or talking on a phone.
The research found that adding a passenger causes a teen driver to more likely be distracted and engage in riskier driving behavior.
Consider the new research when sending your teen driver out the door. Limit the number of the passengers they can have in their car.
