4 Things to Do If You Are Pulled Over For a DUI

You should not drink and drive, but the reality is that you may find yourself in a situation where you are pulled over and suspected of drinking and driving.

Is everyone under the influence, perhaps not, and remember, it’s not illegal to drink in Maryland.  It’s illegal to be under the influence.

But, what if you find yourself in the position of being pulled for a suspected DUI?  Here, are things to keep in mind if you get pulled over for a DUI in Maryland.

Pull Over and Provide Your Information

Suspected drunk drivers are pulled over for a number of reasons, and it’s not always the fiery crash with injured victims.

Most people are pulled over for swerving, speeding, or an equipment violation.  The 50 cent light bulb that illuminates your license plate, if that’s out, then you can be pulled over.  Trust us, if it’s dark outside and you’re driving, the police are looking for any equipment violation to pull you over.

If a cop flashes their lights at you, then move to the side of the road as quickly and safely as possible.

Choose to Remain Silent

Be respectful to police officers and follow directions, but this doesn’t mean that you have to incriminate yourself.

Don’t forget your 5th Amendment rights.  The 5th Amendment is your right to remain silent.

Decline the Field Sobriety Tests

Telling the police the amount of alcohol you had most likely won’t help your case they have learned not to believe you anyway. You can and should decline to perform the field sobriety tests.

To Blow or Not to Blow

Even if you follow all of these steps, chances are you are still going to get arrested and pay the price of driving under the influence. Being put into police custody, especially if you are still drunk, can be a scary experience but staying calm is a must. Respectfully request legal representation when speaking with the police, and remember, anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law.
