What is intestacy?

Very few people actually understand what will happen if they die without a will.
There are many assumptions that people have about their estate. The biggest assumption is that everything will automatically pass to your spouse after you die. This is wrong.
Even if you die without a will, Maryland has a default will for every individual. This default will is called intestacy.
It is the plan that Maryland assumes is the best overall. The problem is that this often is not the best for each individual person. What happens if you die alone?
No blood relatives
This means that there is no blood relative. Now, everyone can eventually find a blood relative if they search back far enough, but Maryland law like all states have a cutoff point.
In Maryland, this cut off point is the descendants of your great-grandparents. If you there are no descendants of your great-grandparents the estate will escheat. This simply means that your hard-earned money will go to the government. To prevent this from happening please give our office a call and we would be happy to help you.
