A Fatal Car Accident Can Expose Insurance Deficiences

It is an unfortunate fact of life that fatal car accidents occur every day in our country.

People assume that “someone’s insurance will cover that”, but this is often not true. In fact, an at-fault driver in Maryland can – by law – have as little as $30,000 of liability insurance coverage. Some drivers even disregard the law and have no insurance at all.

How do you protect yourself and your loved ones from such situations?  Our experienced personal injury attorney Robert Fiore explains.

Protecting your family from a fatal car accident

Maryland allows its drivers to purchase “uninsured motorist” or “UM” coverage as part of their own insurance policy. This coverage can provide an additional layer of insurance over and above any insurance carried by the at-fault driver, or provide a source of insurance coverage if the at-fault driver is completely uninsured.

Additionally, there may be other policies of insurance coverage available to you if you or a loved one are the victim of a serious car accident. These additional policies could belong to an employer of the at-fault driver, or to a person who owned the vehicles being driven by the at-fault driver; they could even be policies that another relative in your household has!

Our attorneys are well versed in property and casualty insurance law and can assist you in ensuring that you are able to recover every dollar that you are entitled to – from every policy that you are entitled to recover from. Remember, once you ‘settle up’ with an insurance company, you will be required to sign a “release of all claims.” Before doing that, contact us. We can investigate and discover additional sources of insurance coverage if they exist.
