How Long Will a Personal Injury Case Take?
One of the most common questions our office gets asked about a client’s personal injury case is: How long will a personal injury case take?
Like many answers to legal questions, it depends.
Primarily, it depends on the extent of your injuries. Most automobile accident cases involve minor soft tissue injuries that can take several weeks to resolve. More serious injuries that require surgery can take over a year or longer. Finally, some injuries are permanent and will last your entire life.
Typically, a minor soft tissue personal injury case will take three to six months to reach a settlement.
For example, if you treat with a chiropractor for 30 days, it will take the attorney’s office about 30 days to prepare your demand and send it to the insurance company. Then, the insurance company will take about 30 days to review your case. Once an offer is submitted, it might take another 30 days to negotiate a settlement. After you reach a settlement, it might take another 30 days to get the release, check, and a meeting with your attorney to distribute the money.
If you file a lawsuit, then you can expect your automobile accident case to take another three months to a year depending on where you file your lawsuit.
Your individual lawyer should be able to give you an honest timeline for resolving your case. Give them a call and fill them in on what happened during your free consultation as the length of time will vary depending on your specific case.
